Sclerotherapy (Spider Vein Treatment) in Indiana

Spider veins can be unsightly and can cause considerable self consciousness in men and women who at one time enjoyed wearing shorts and sunning their legs. Spider veins are most common in women after pregnancy, but can occur at any time. At our Schererville or Valparaiso, Indiana, plastic surgery offices, Dr. Gus Galante uses a simple technique called sclerotherapy to eliminate spider veins, which restores a healthy look to the affected area.

During your consultation at our Indiana cosmetic surgery office, Dr. Galante will examine your veins and skin tone. A complete medical history will be taken, and Dr. Galante will need a complete list of any medications you are taking. Dr. Galante will need to determine if the veins for treatment are spider veins or varicose veins. Further examination might be necessary to determine if your condition is due to a more serious ailment that needs medical attention. Be sure to inform Dr. Galante if you experience discomfort in your legs, pain, itching and/or swelling. Dr. Galante is very personable and will encourage you to talk about your goals and to ask any questions you may have about the procedure and the cause of spider veins. You will be given a list of medications and vitamins to avoid prior to your procedure.

Sclerotherapy is a series of injections directly into the vein that causes the vein to collapse and eventually disappear. Injections are administered with a tiny needle, and each injection destroys about an inch of vein at a time. In many cases, two or three treatment sessions one month apart are necessary to completely eliminate the veins. Overall, one can expect a 70 to 80% improvement.

Sclerotheraphy is performed as an outpatient procedure in our plastic surgery offices in Indiana. The treatment typically takes less than an hour depending upon the number of veins to be treated. Anesthesia is not necessary for the procedure.

You will need to wear a compression garment or wrap for a few days after each treatment. Wearing support hose for the first few weeks after treatment will enhance the veins’ collapse.

Strenuous activities should be avoided for the first week after treatment so as not to add pressure to the veins. Indiana patients are encouraged to walk on daily basis to increase their circulation and decrease the risk of blood clots.

Sclerotherapy is a very effective treatment, but it will not prevent new veins from forming.

Not everyone is a candidate for Sclerotherapy in Indiana. Having realistic expectations about the impact treatment will have on your life is important. Dr. Galante will discuss your expectations and evaluate your case during your consultation.

Since Sclerotherapy for spider veins is a cosmetic procedure, it is not covered by insurance and fees and expenses are solely the responsibility of the patient. For your convenience, we offer links to patient financing online.
